Frequently Asked Questions

How long should an air conditioner last?
The average life of an air conditioner/heat pump seems to be from ten to fifteen years, depending on a variety of particulars such as usage, care, and, probably the most important, a correct installation at the beginning. In northern climates an air conditioner will last longer, simply because the cooling season is much shorter. On the other hand, our furnaces seem to outlast the furnaces in the north.

How often should filters be checked?
Whether your filters are pleated, disposable, electrostatic, or electronic, one thing they all have in common, and that homeowners tend to forget, is that they must be kept clean! Not keeping the filters clean has become the most common cause for premature failure of air conditioners. You should check filters monthly and replace or clean them when it is apparent they are no longer allowing air to pass through them freely.

Should I cover my outdoor unit in the winter? Absolutely NOT! Air conditioners are made to last for years in the outdoors. Heat pumps run nearly year-round, and it makes no sense to try to cover them.

What are normal temperatures for a frost-free fridge? The fresh food section should be about 40 degrees F or 4 degrees C in the middle of the fresh food section. And the freezer section should be at 0 to 5 degrees F or -18 to -15 degrees C.

What are some Energy Efficiency Tips?
For free-flowing, heated air, move drapes or furniture away from radiators.

Seal air leaks around windows and door frames with weather or caulk stripping to prevent heat loss.

You can use ceiling fans to circulate the warmer air found near the ceiling throughout your home.

Keep curtains and shades open throughout the day so that the sun can make your home warmer. Close drapes at night to maintain the heat.

Remove window air conditioner units in the winter to avoid drafts.

Install glass doors in front of your fireplace to prevent heat escaping up the chimney.
